Keeping track of books, my own and the ones I read

Hexed - Kevin Hearne Loved it! Didn't realize this was book 2 until I was halfway done, but I wasn't lost. I listened to the audio version; the narrator is crazy-talented!
Second Chance Boyfriend - Monica Murphy I loved the wrap up of Fable and Drew's story. Marshmallow forever! "Drew Callahan is my absolute weakness. Like a drug I can't get enough of. He's my addiction and if I'm being honest with myself, I'm not looking to kick that particular habit anytime soon." "You've turned me into a poet, Fable." Yes, there is poetry!"I like everything about you," I say. "The old you, the new you. All of you."
The Nerdist Way: How to Reach the Next Level (In Real Life) - Chris Hardwick I listened to it on audio and Chris is the narrator! Loved it. Not only is he funny, but the info he shares is really thought provoking. There are a couple of chapters I'm planning to listen to again.
The Stillness of You - Julie Bale I absolutely loved Georgia and Ben's story. Because of a tragedy that happened in her past, she's damaged and believes that she may not be fixable. The book opens soon after she's released from a mental institution and goes to live with her brother who works for an NHL team. That's how she meets hottie, ladies' man, superstar athlete Ben. Her brother tells her that the guys on the team are off limits (Georgia is a bit of a nympho and has slept with a few of them), but it turns out that Ben is just what she needs to heal and believe in herself again. Even though he's a bad boy, signing the boobs of a groupie, he's patient and kind to Georgia and totally adores her. There are sexy times...and they're hot.
Easy - Tammara Webber I was worried that with the heavy subject matter (I read the first scene several months ago and had to set it aside), it was gonna be, you know, sad and depressing. I didn't want to read about *that* happening, particularly to the main character. But it didn't. And I loved the story. It was deeply emotional and heart-wrenching, yet uplifting and empowering at the same time. It's one of those books that ends and you're sad, because it's over.
Divergent - Veronica Roth I listened to this book and loved the author's writing style. A lot of people are comparing it to The Hunger Games, but it reminded me of Ender's Game, if Ender's Game were a romance. An unlikely hero goes through a series of tests and succeeds even though the odds are against her. It's very dark, but I loved the chemistry between Tris and Tobias. The only reason I didn't feel like giving it 5 stars was because the ending was more like a turning point that left you hanging rather than the end of the story.
The Distance Between Us - Bart Yates Loved the writing style and I loved the quirky characters...to a point. This book had so much potential. Alex, a young college student shunned by his family, befriends Hester, an elderly woman who is also shunned by her family. They form a sweet and delightful friendship, and together, they learn to accept and forgive. However, I hated a pivotal scene, which clouded the rest of the book for me. Had I not been reading it for book club, I wouldn't have finished. ***Spoiler below.***In what universe is it acceptable for a man to force himself on another person and not call it sexual assault? Eric, Alex's new friend, was passed out drunk. Alex, who was attracted to him, unzips his friend's pants and starts to give him a blow job. The guy is freaking passed out!!!! Eric wakes up and the shit hits the fan. When Alex relays this event to Hester, he's not remorseful that he forced himself on a vulnerable person, and her reaction is basically well, we all make mistakes we're not proud of. Whaaaat? If Eric had been Erica, would she have reacted a little stronger? If someone doesn't give consent, it's not okay to unzip their pants and go to town just because you find them attractive and you're horny!!!As a reader, I felt betrayed that I had grown to like these two characters so much and was expected to accept this event (there's a similar event in Alex's past) as okay. Sexual assault is never, ever okay! Period!
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova Listened to this on audio. Wow! Loved it. The narrators were fantastic with all the characters and accents. My favorite was, of course, Dracula. Or, as he said it, Dra-KOOL-ya.
Deliver the Moon - Rebecca J. Clark A great, emotional read! I loved it! (Disclaimer: This is my sister, so I love everything she writes.)
Bound to Seduction - Elisabeth Naughton A fast, fun, erotic paranormal romance. I read it in one sitting while on vacation. I love Elisabeth's books and this was no exception. The hero was hot and tortured and had an impossible obstacle to overcome. I was like, how in the world are these two going to get together in the end??? But, believe me, they do.The Firebrand world is complex and the heroes are to die for. I can't wait to read the next book.
My Lady Mage - Alexis Morgan If you like fantasy and romance, you'll love this book!
If I Were You (Inside Out Trilogy, #1) - Lisa Renee Jones I read this in 2-3 sittings while on vacation. IMO, a perfect summer beach read! In fact, I forced myself to put it down so I could save more for the next day. I didn't want to be done yet. People have described it as being like 50 Shades, so I must admit, I was skeptical at first. I'm not a big fan of that book, plus, I've read a few other "just like 50" books and have been disappointed. The heroine is a school teacher with a deep love of art and the art world, but she hasn't tapped into that passion. She's an every woman type character that readers can relate to, which makes the emotion and steamy parts even more realistic and vivid. The hero (I'm purposely not naming him because as I read the book, I wasn't sure for a while which guy was going to be the hero) is hot and mysterious and interesting. He's domineering and forceful, but not overly so. And I totally get the comparison to Basic Instinct. The heroine is haunted by the erotic journals of a missing woman and she basically takes the woman's place to find out what happened to her. This mystery is constantly hanging over her head. If I Were You is well-written and intelligent and would appeal to readers who are new to erotic romance. I loved it!
Because You Tempt Me - Beth Kery When I opened up my Kindle to read last night, I was so excited that the first installment of this sexy serialized novel was waiting for me! I'd forgotten I'd pre-ordered it. Unlike a few other popular erotic novels I've read lately, I could really relate to the two main characters right from the start. Ian is intense and magnetic without crossing the border into Creep Town. Francesca thinks of herself as slightly clueless, but she's not naive and doesn't come across that way to others. I can't wait to find out what happens next. And oh, man, it has one of the hottest 1-person scenes I've ever read. A note about this being a serialized novel...I totally loved it! Given my busy schedule, I read mostly at night, right before I go to bed. Even if a book is riveting, sometimes I'm just too tired to keep reading. This was the perfect size. Two meaty chapters that has me eagerly awaiting the next installment. If you're the type of reader who likes to sit down and read from cover to cover in 1 or 2 sittings, you may want to wait until all the installments come out. But if you're like me, grabbing chunks of reading time here and there (mostly before bedtime), this is perfect!
The Prisoner of Heaven: A Novel - Carlos Ruiz Zafon One of my favorite authors. I love his writing style! This is part of the connected book series with Shadow of the Wind and Angel's Game. Not a lot of action happens (most of the action is in the form of backstory that Fermin tells Daniel) and some issues remain unresolved at the end, so it's definitely not a standalone novel. It basically sets up the 4th and final book in the series. If you've never read Zafon before, I'd recommend not starting with this book because I think you'll be confused. Or at the very least, you won't get as much out of it if you had started with one of the other two.But definitely read Shadow of the Wind then come back to this one.
City of Thieves: A Novel - David Benioff Surprisingly humorous story of two young men during the Siege of Leningrad. I fell in love with both Lev and Kolya. Would be a great book club read.
Please Look After Mom - Shin Kyung-sook, 신경숙, Kim Chi-Young The book was mainly told in the second person, using the viewpoints of 3-4 people. I found this method of storytelling very confusing as I didn't know who *I* was supposed to be be most of the time. It took me several pages of a new scene to figure out whose head I was in. Unlike The Help, which had multiple and very distinct first person narratives, the voices in Please Look After Mom all sounded the same. Since it's a translated book, perhaps a lot was lost in the process. Besides, I don't recall reading a book in second person before and it was just strange. It felt so accusatory, which could've been part of the reason it was told this way. The family members of this woman who became lost never paid much attention to her until after she was gone.
